Two Cases of Metanephric Adenoma of the Kidney; Diagnosed by Ultrasonography-Guided Needle Aspiration Biopsy
Abstract
-
Metanephric adenoma is a recently described renal tumor. It appears to be benign with no malignant potential, and its chief importance is related to the fact that it is most often misinterpreted as renal cell carcinoma or epithelial Wilms' tumor. We report 2 cases of metanephric adenoma in 44 and 24 year-old women who had suffered from flank pain and lower abdominal pain. Ultrasonography, computed tomography and angiography findings were consistent with dianosis of hemorrhagic renal cystic lesion in case one. Another case was clinically and radiologically thought to be a renal cell carcinoma of the hypovascular type. Metanephric adenoma was diagnosed by ultrasonography-guided needle aspiration biopsy which showed small, tightly packed or tubular and papillary structures and acini. The clinical, radiologic and histologic features presented here should help to promote the correct preoperative differential diagnosis and to avoid unnecessary aggressive treatment.
