Clinical Study of 598 Outpatients with Vitiligo for 5 years (1990-1994)

Abstract

We evaluated the clinical manifestations of 598 patients of vitiligo who had visited Chonnam University Hospital during last 5 years. The results were as follows: 1. The incidence of vitiligo was 2.8% among the outpatients of dermatological department. There were 323 female (54%) and 275 males (46%). 2. The mean age of onset was 22.5 years (male: 20.2 years, female: 24.6 years). The age of onset was less than 20 years in 332 cases (55.5%). Duration of disease was less than 1 year in 325 cases (54.3%). 3. The degree of depigmented lesion was less than 10% of body surface area in 530 cases (88.6%). The most common site of lesion was face in 23.8%. There were 295 cases (49.3%) of generalized type, 286 cases (47.8%) of localized type, 15 cases (2.5%) of halonevus, 2 cases (0.3%) of universal type. 4. The most common precipitation factor was trauma (2.8%) and family history was present in 13.7%.
