Abstract

This study was designed to compare the hemodynamic changes and motor and sensory block of 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine 15microgram (Group B; n=25) with those of 0.5% hyperbaric tetracaine 15microgram (Group T; n=25) used in spinal anesthesia in patients scheduled for transurethral surgery. The results were as follows; 1. There was no difference in maximal level of sensory block and tome taken to reach it and recovery time of sensory function between two groups. 2. Onset time of motor block of lower extremity was similar in both groups, but full recovery time of motor block was significantly shorter and degree of motor block was lesser in bupivacaine group compared to tetracaine group. 3. There was no difference in the changes of blood pressure and heart rate between two groups. Hypotension (mean arterial pressure < 30% of preanesthetic value) was not developed in both groups. These findings indicate that 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine may be useful alternative local anesthetics to 0.5% hyperbaric tetracaine in spinal anesthesia for transurethral surgery. In addition, patient's discomfort due to postanesthetic motor block could be reduced with using 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine group.
