Abstract

Leiomyosarcoma is a rare tumor that originates in the smooth muscle. The omentum has been rarely reported as a primary of occurrence with leiomyosarcoma. A 58-year-old woman presented with abdominal distension and palpable pelvic mass. Abdominal computed tomography scan showed 32x27x16 cm-sized heterogeneous enhancing mass in the pelvic and abdominal cavity. An exploratory laparotomy revealed a solid tumor in the greater omentum and total omentectomy and multiple biopsies were performed. The tumor was diagnosed as a leiomyosarcoma by histological and immunohistochemical examinations. We present here a case of primary leiomyosarcoma of the greater omentum with brief review of literature.

Figure

  • Fig. 1 (A) Abdominal computed tomography showed heterogenous enhancement of the central area surrounded by the relatively enhanced outer part. There was no visible lymphadenopathy or metastasis. (B) Thirty cm sized grayish round mass is attached to greater omentum, which was histologically confirmed to be leiomyosarcoma.

  • Fig. 2 (A) The tumor cells are slender or slightly plump cells with cytoplasmic longitudinal striation and moderate nuclear atypism (H&E, ×100, enlarged ×400). (B) This myxoid tumor are positive for smooth muscle actin (×100).
