A Case of Papillary Transitional Cell Carcinoma Arising from the Benign Cystic Teratoma of Ovary

Abstract

Malignant transformation of benign cystic teratoma is rare, with an incidence of 1.8%. Squmaous carcinoma was most frequent, followed by adenocarcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, and fibrosarcoma in order. No earlier report have revealed any effective standard therapy for benign cystic teratoma with malignant transformation. We report here previously undescribed malignant transformation arising from the benign cystic teratoma, papillary transitional cell carcinoma. We have experienced it in a 67-year-old woman with complaints of voiding difficulty and lower abdominal pain. The patient underwent total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, infracolic omentectomy followed by adjuvant chemotherapy containing carboplatin and etoposide. To determine the optimal use of radiation, chemotherapy and surgery, a study involving more patients will be necessary. We report a case with brief review of concerned literature.
