A Case of Intestinal Pseudo-obstruction with Chronic Myelocytic Leukemia

Abstract

Intestinal pseudo-obstruction is a rare disorder which is characterized by small bowel obstruction without evidence of a mechanically obstructive lesion. It may be associated with several types of underlying neoplasms. A 51-year-old man was admitted because of diffuse abdominal pain for 3 days. He had been diagnosed as chronic myelocytic leukemia and diabetes mellitus about 8 months ago. Blood sugar level was well controlled with dietary therapy. Distension of small bowel loops was noted markedly on plain abdominal film and on small bowel series. There was no mechanically obstructive lesion on abdominal CT and on colonoscopy. Other possible causes of ileus were not found. Thus, he was diagnosed as intestinal pseudo-obstruction. Leukapheresis and chemotherapy for cytoreduction were not effective for abdominal pain. However, after administration of erythromycin 250 mg three times a day, he was recovered from ileus and became comfortable.
