Gastric Emptying Time and Electrogastrographic Studies in Patient
with Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Abstract
- Delayed gastric emptying time (GET) has been reported in patients with
irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, it is not clear whether electrogastrography
(EGG) and GET are associated with dyspeptic symptoms in patients with IBS. Thus,
we studied GET and EGG in patients with IBS.
METHODS
Dyspeptic symptoms was defined
as bloating. GET and/or EGG were obtained in both groups.
RESULTS
GET (T1/2)
in patients with IBS was significantly delayed compared to that of normal controls
(59.0+/-16.9 min vs 45.0+/-12.7, min p<0.01). There was no statistically significant
difference in GET according to dyspeptic symptoms. Abnormal EGG in patients with
dyspeptic symptoms was observed in 4 of 7 (57.1%). In patients without dyspeptic
symptoms, it was observed in 3 of 9 (33%). Moreover, abnormal EGG in normal controls
was observed in 4 of 15 (26.2%). There was no statistical difference in the rates
of abnormal EGG between the patients with and without dyspeptic symptoms, and between
the patients and normal controls.
CONCLUSIONS
It is suggested that the mechanism
of bloating in patients with IBS may be related to functional abnormality of small
bowel or colon.
