Abstract

Allergic rhinitis is one of the most common intractable disease, and it's chief complaints are nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, sneezing and nasal itching sensation in the order. Many methods have been tried for the management of allergic rhinitis. However, there is no completely satisfactory modality of treatment. A 30 year old male patient suffering from an allergic rhinitis was recently treated at our pain clinic by repeated stellate ganglion block (SGB) with a 1% mepivacaine 5 ml. Patient showed immediate signs of improvement, but prolonged effect was not achieved. Therefore we planned to perform stellate ganglion phenol neurolysis. Under the fluoroscopy, we placed 22 gauge needle at the anterolateral side of the seventh cervical spine and then injected 3% phenol 3.5 ml. One week later, patient's symptoms were improved without any complication. From our experience we conclude that stellate ganglion phenol neurolysis appears to be a good choice for the treatment of the allergic rhinitis.
