Sonographic Findings of Testicular Rupture

Abstract

PURPOSE: To evaluate the sonographic findings of the testicular rupture as urologic emergency and to assess the diagnostic value of high resolution ultrasonography for the testicular rupture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
During the 90 months from July 1991 to December 1997, scrotal sonography was performed to 37 patients with scrotal trauma. Among them 10 cases were surgically confirmed as testicular rupture. The sonographic findings in these confirmed cases were retrospectively reviewed and compared with the surgical findings.
RESULTS
In preoperative sonography, 8 cases were diagnosed as testicular rupture but 2 cases were misdiagnosed as intratesiticular hematomas. 8 cases showed marginal irregularity with inhomogeneous internal echotexture. 4 cases showed the extruded testicular parenchyme out of the tunica albuginea. The multiple low echoic fracture lines were observed in 3 cases.
CONCLUSION
The sonographic findings of testicular rupture were marginal irregularity with inhomogeneous internal echotexture, extruded parenchyme and fracture lines. And the ultrasonography is simple and relatively reliable methods for the preop-erative evaluation of the testicular rupture.
