Measurement of the Size of Seminal Vesicle with Transrectal Ultrasonography
Abstract
-
PURPOSE: To measure the size of the seminal vesicles with transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) and to evaluate the factors which affect on the size of the seminal vesicles.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
We performed TRUS in 173 patients using 9-5 MHz curved array transrectal transducer. The size of the seminal vesicles was measured as the greatest diameter perpendicular to the long axis of the seminal vesicles, and prostate volume was determined with the sagittal and transverse images. We also evaluate whether the size of the seminal vesicles was correlated with some factors such as age, prostate volume, and midline cystic lesions of the prostate.
RESULTS
The mean size of right seminal vesicle was 0.99+/-0.33 cm and that of left seminal vesicle was 0.99+/-0.30cm. The size difference between both right and left seminal vesicles was 0.1603+/-0.1322cm, The size of the seminal vesicles was not statistically correlated with patients age (p>0.05), but correlated with prostate volume and the presence of midline cystic lesions of the prostate (p>0.05).
CONCLUSION
The size of the seminal vesicles was correlated with prostate volume. When midline cystic lesion of the prostate was present, the size of the seminal vesicles was increased. The size difference between both seminal vesicles was 0.1603+/-0.1322 cm.
