Clinical Diagnosis of Mental Handicap Child and Their Assessment

Abstract

140 cases of mentally handicapped children were investigated for clinical diagnosis and assessed for their abilities by Griffith test. The youngest child was 1 month old and the oldest was 15 years old. The clinical diagnosis was able to make in 75%: 40% was cerebral palsy and the rest 35% showed various diagnosis. In 25%, etiological diagnosis was not able to make. Their abilities were assessed on the base of Griffith test and Korean WISK test. Ones whose GQ over 70 was 22.7% and GQ between 70 to 40 was 44%. Of these 140, motor ability below 85 was 82.6%, 81% was socially deprivated, 89% require speech therapy and 84.8% require occupational therapy. By this observation, special education should be accompanied with physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy, and it is emphasized that and education or training should be based on investigation and assessment.
