Abstract
- PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to evaluate M-mode echocardiographic abnormalities in infants of relatively well controlled diabetic mothers and to determine the timing of spontaneous regression.
METHODS
Echocardiographic study was prospectively carried out in 9 neonates born to diabetic mothers(infants of diabetic mothers, IDM) and 6 newborn infants(control) matched for weight and age. And the study were repeated in 3 of 9 IDM(follow up) after 3 to 16 months. M-mode echocardiography included measurements of left and right ventricular free wall and interventricular septal thickness and ventricular diastolic and systolic dimensions; LV function is expressed as shortening fracion.
RESULTS
Interventricular septal thickness(0.56+/-0.13 vs 0.32+/-0.09) and STd/PWTd(2.04+/-0.60 vs 1.19+/-0.44) were significantly higher in infants of diabetic mothers thanin control newborn infants. Follow up measurements showed regression of interventricular septal thickness(2.13+/-0.58 vs 1.02+/-0.66/M2) but no significant improvement in STd/PWTd(2.04+/-0.60 vs 1.67+/-1.25) compared with initial measurements.
CONCLUSION
M-mode echocardiographic abnormalities including interventricular septal hypertrophy and high STd/PWTd were observed even in infants of relatively well controlled diabetic mothers and may persist for a somewhat longer period.
