The Comparison of Postoperative Astigmatic Changes Between Phscoemulsification and Planned Extracapsular Cataract Extraction

Abstract

Recently, phacoemulsification is commonly performed in cataract operation. The purpose of this study is to obtain a better postoperative result in cataract surgery. Each age matched fifty-one cases of phacoemulsification group and planned extracapsular cataract operation group were evaluated for corrected visual acuity, corneal astigmatic change and astigmatic axial change. Each patient was followed for one year at regular interval(one week, two months, six months, one year). So, we obtained these conclusions; 1) In postoperative visual acuity, recovery of visual acuity was little faster in phacoemulsification group than planned extracapsular cataract operation group. But it was not significant at each follow up periods(p>0.1). 2) Corneal astigmatic change was much little in phacoemulsification group much smaller than planned extracapsular cataract operation in one week and two months after operation. Thereafter there were not significant difference in it between two groups. 3) Postoperative change of astigmatic axis, shift toward against the rule, was more remarkably in extracapsular cataract operation group than phacoemulsification group.
