Abstract
- Several craniofacial deformities and syndromes feature hypoplasia of the midfacial skeleton. These deformities may result from developmental disorders such as syndromic craniosynostosis or cleft lip and palate, or from trauma leading to midface retrusion because of malunion or normal growth disturbance. Reconstruction of these deformities was primarily based on a Le Fort III osteotomy: (1) the conventional Le Fort III osteotomy with bone transplantation, (2) distraction using subcutaneous distraction devices fixed on both sides at the on zygoma, and (3) bone distraction using a rigid external distraction device (RED distractor), which is fixed to the skull and pulling the maxilla or the upper teeth. We report a patient with midfacial hypoplasia treated by Le Fort III distraction osteogenesis.
