Postoperative sexual life in patients with radical cystectomy and urinary deversion

Abstract

We inquied the postoperative sexual life of forty-one alive male respondents who had undergone radical cystectomy and urinary diversion for bladder cancer at the Pusan National University Hospital from September 1974 to December 1990. Preoperatively, 29 of 41 patients(70.7%) expressed sexually active. Postoperatively, only 11 patients(37.9%) were potent and erectile function was recovered at the interval from 2 weeks to 1 year after operation(av. 4.7mos.), but they were able to have sexual intercourse at the interval from 1 month to 5 years after the operation(av. 12.5mos.). Frequency of intercourse was reduced to from averge once a week preoperatively, to average 0.6 times postoperatively and male-above coital position was the most favorite one. They considered dry ejaculation as the most undesirable problem in sexual life and others were decreased libido, perineal discomfort and cumbersome due to urostomy bag in order. A feeling of satisfaction of sexual partners were mostly reduced, as compared with preoperative state. In conclusion, with a view of quality of life, we must had concern about preliminary education and conseling for postoperative sexual life because radical cystectomy and urinary diversion had much impact on it.
