Abstract
- During the years 1990 through 1999, a retrospective study of 17 cerebellopontine angle meningiomas was performed. A retromastoid approach was used in all cases: 14 tumors were excised totally and 3 tumors subtotally. 14 patents were females with a median age of 58.7 years. The most common presenting complaints were 8th cranial nerve dysfunction and headache. Most of the tumors that we operated on were large(>4cm) and extension into the tentorial regions. Pathologic findings revealed benign in 16 patients, atypical in 1 patients. Tumors were located posterior to the internal auditory meatus in 11 cases and anterior 3 cases, enplaque type 3 cases. Two of three subtotally excised tumor required radiation therapy. One except all tumors has recurred. Postoperative results were good in 16 cases and dead in 1 case. This results suggest that site of 7th-8th cranial nerves complex, en-plaque type meningioma, and petroclival meningioma with extension into the clivus were factors contributing to mortality and morbidity. Postoperative radiation therapy is recommended for subtotally excised tumor.
