A Case of Traumatic Eyeball Extrusion

Abstract

To report the management of a patient who had traumatic eyeball extrusion with avulsion of the optic nerve and all extraocular muscles except lateral rectus. 18-year-old woman presented with the eyeball extrusion of the left eye after trauma. There were laceration of upper eyelid, eyeball extrusion with avulsion of the optic nerve and all extraocular muscles except lateral rectus. In the orbital CT, there were multiple facial bone fractures, medial, lateral and inferior orbital wall fractures in both orbit. At six weeks follow-up, The patient had enophthalmos of 3 mm and improvement of eyeball movement at all gaze except mild limitation at extreme gaze. At six months after surgery, a prosthesis fits well with the left eye without prominent enophthalmos or infections. In a case of post-traumatic eyeball extrusion with orbital complex fracture, we could obtained good result with the reduction of the eyeball without enucleation.
