The near point of convergence (NPC) test is an indicator of the performance of near work. We measured the NPC to compare it between 251 normal subjects and 25 convergence insufficiency patients. The average NPC was 7.92 cm( objective: 7.11 cm, subjects, and 21.32 cm (objective: 17.31 cm, subjective: 25.33 cm) in convergence insufficiency patients, respectively. We experienced that the objective NPC was more shorter than the subjective NPC due to the effect of volutary convergence and that the average NPC of the convergence insufficiency patients was more remote than that of the normal subject, especially to be measured subjectively. Therefore, we suggest that the subjective NPC is more useful than the objective NPC to assess the maximum output of the vergence system, and have diagnostic and prognostic value in convergence insufficiency.
