Two Cases of Brain Dead Donor Liver Transplantation and Living Related Donor Liver Transplantation in Children with Fulminant Hepatitis
Abstract
-
The management of fulminant hepatitis has been significantly changed by the availability of liver transplantation (LT). In the era prior to the development of LT, most of patients with this syndrome died despite of intensive medical support. However, the majority of patients who underwent LT survive nowadays. We experienced two cases of childhood fulminant hepatitis successfully treated by brain dead donor LT in one case and living donor LT from her mother in another case. In addition the application of living donor LT to fulminant hepatitis provides promising options to overcome the shortage of the liver donors in such a emergent situation. According to our clinical experience pediatricians and medical doctors who care for patients with fulminant hepatitis should consider risk stratification and be careful in patient selection for LT.
