Abstract

Candida famata was first isolated from air in Japan by Saito in 1922. In the clinical laboratory, it is occasionally isolated from the skin or mucosa and is generally regarded as a contaminant. A 69-year-old male with esophageal cancer admitted to Wonju Christian Hospital because of cough and sputum. 29 days after admission, the patient developed fever. Blood cultures were performed and antibacterial therapy was started. Blood samples for culture taken by venipuncture were positive for yeasts, subsequently identified as C. famata by the ATB 32C yeast identification system (bioMerieux, Marcy-I' Etoile, France).
