Improvement of the Drawing Program to Manufacture a Circular Template for Measurement of Inhibition Zone Size in Disk Diffusion Test

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Measurement of inhibition zone diameters with a sliding caliper or ruler in disk diffusion testing is too laborious and time-consuming. So, we developed a drawing program (DST-template) to manufacture a circular template for the accurate and rapid measurement of inhibition zone size. The aim of this study was to introduce a upgraded content of DST-template program.
METHODS
This program was developed by Microsoft Visual Basic version 3.0 software. Template size, number and position of disk were designed to set for 12 hole and 8 hole disk dispenser (Becton Dickinson, Germany). We compared the reading time of inhibition zone size of disk susceptibility test between DST-template and ruler method when 12 hole disk dispenser was used.
RESULTS
Reading time of inhibition zone by the template method was approximately half of the ruler method.
CONCLUSIONS
We concluded that this program is a rapid and accurate method for measurement and interpretation of the zones of inhibition in disk diffusion test.
