Development and Clinical Application of Automated Cytogenetic Analyzer: CHROMOSYS System

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Cytogenetic studies, especially karyotyping is time consuming and highly labor-intensive procedure. Computerization of karyotyping could solve or reduce the above problems. Though the automated karyotyping systems developed by USA or Europe were used in some cytogenetics laboratories in Korea, those systems were very expensive.
METHODS
We developed the inexpensive, computerized karyotyping system, CHROMOSYS. Images of metaphase chromosomes captured by CCD camera were transferred to image archiving board in personal computer. Process of karyotyping, image enhancement and presentation were done in CHROMOSYS software program.
RESULTS
Using CHROMOSYS system, it took only 30 minutes from image pickup to the print of clinical report which karyotyping photograph. This system was very stable in the chromosomal analysis process of lymphocyte and hematologic malignancy, and was capable of using the Korean language, which was very useful to describe the discrete clinical interpretation of the results.
CONCLUSIONS
We developed automatic karyotyping system, CHROMOSYS. Using this system, we reduced chromosomal analysis time, and could make the comprehensive interpretative report including karyotyping photograph. CHROMOSYS could be used with ease and with low price in clinical laboratories, compared to the previous automatic karyotyping system.
