Abstract
- Phytobezoars, the most common type of gastric bezoars, are rare disease in the stomach and small bowel without underlying previous gastroenterologic pathology. But, with increasing surgical treatment of gastric diseases, they tend to increase, and they are also known to be a rare cause of small intestinal obstruction. Gastric bezoars are usually diagnosed by endoscopic examination or radiologic study and treated by endoscopic disruption, enzymatic digestion or surgery. They may cause gastric ulcer, hematemesis, melena, or intestinal perforation due to pressure necrosis, but no case has been reported on the biliary tract obstruction. Recently we have experienced a rare case of the gastric bezoar which caused acute cholecystitis and pancreatitis following bile flow obstruction in a patient who had undergone gastric operation.
