Abstract
- Background
Endocrine abnormalities in patients with chronic renal failure are well documented. The present study aimed to assess the influence of recombinant human erythropoietin(rhEpo) therapy on serum prolacin values in male hemodialyzed patients.
Patients and Methods
Thirteen male hemodialysis patients with rhEpo treatment(Group 1), 13 non-rhEpo treatment(Group 2), and 11 healthy men with normal renal function for normal control(Group 3) were evaluated. Complete biochemical and hormonal mearsurement were performed in each group; serum prolactin, testosterone, estradiol, intact parathyroid hormone (i-PTH), follicular stimulating hormone(FSH), iuteinizing hormone(LH), hemoglobin, hematocrit, sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, inorganic phosphorus, blood urea nitrogen(BUN), creatinine.
Results
1. Hemoglobin levels were 13.20+/-1.15 g/dL in normal control group. Its levels were significantly higher(p<0.05) in rhEpo group; 11.34+/-0.60 g/dL, compared with non-rhEpo group; 8.20+/-1.61 g/dL. 2. Serum prolactin concentrations were 91.5+/-31.18 ng/mL in normal control group. Its levels were significantly lower(p<0.001) in rhEpo group; 14.46+/-5.13 ng/mL, compared with non-rhEpo group; 81.22+/-64.08 ng/mL. 3. Serum intact PTH concentrations were 14.72+/-10.74 pg/mL in normal control group. Its levels were significantly lower(p<0.05) in rhEpo group; 114.92+/-98.72 pg/mL, compared with non-rhEpo group; 253.84+/-198.84 pg/mL. 4. Serum estradiol concentrations were 43.62+/-20.07 pg/mL in normal control group. Its level were significantly higher(p<0.05) in rhEpo group; 219.58+/-141.85 pg/dL, compared with non-rhEpo group; 81.20+/-53.63 pg/dL. 5. Serum testosterone, FSH and LH concentrations were not significantly different among groups in this study.
Conclusions
; After treated with rhEpo treatment in chronic hemodialitic male patients, serum prolactin and intact parathyroid hormone levels were significantly lower rhEpo group than non-rhEpo group. But these levels were not normalized.
