Abstract

Electron microscopic characteristics of primary (rhegmatogenous) retinal separation are described. They namely are degeneration of photoreceptor outer segment, disappearance of lamellar inclusion bodies and melanin granules from apical process both in retinal pigment epithelium, and vacuole formation of middle, inner layers of retina. The pathogenesis of retinal separation is discussed briefly in view of abnormality in finer structural relationship between regions vitreous with retina and retina with choroid.
