Abstract
- Vibrio cholerae non-01 strains are biochemically indistinguishable from classic V. cholerae 01 strains except for their inability to agglutinate in Vibrio 01 antiserum. The spectrum of illness is wider with these variants than with the 01 strains and includes gastroenteritis, wound, ear, cerebrospinal fluid and peritoneal fluid infections, and septicemia. Although septicemia caused by V. cholerae non-01 are uncommon, peritonitis by this organism are even rarer. We have experienced a case of septicemia with peritonitis due to V. cholerae non-01 in a patient with liver cirrhosis and diabetes mellitus. In our knowledge, this is the first documented case of V. cholerae non-01 septicemia with peritonitis in Korea.
