Abstract

Band keratopathy is characterized by the slow and gradual development of a gray band. axially from the limbus in the expoiled part of the cornea in the palpebral aperture and usually associated with longstanding uveitis, ocular degeneration, and interstitial keratitis. In 1952, Grant first described the extraction of calcium from the cornea by means of EDTA (ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid). EDTA treatment should be primary in case of band keratopathy and often makes future corneal surgery unnecessary. EDTA has been used in many medical fields. Eilpecially in ophthalmologic field, EDTA has been used in the treatment of band keratopathy and alkali burns on the cornea and conjunctiva. From 1977 to July 1980, the author used 0.01M or 0.02M EDTA to treat 6 cases of corneal opacities due to band keratopathy in our department by the modified Grant method. All of these patients had. history of ocular injury or intraocular inflammation with secondary corneal opacities and posterior synechia formation, etc. After EDTA treatment, irritative symptoms were relieved or subsided in all cases. In addition to this, good cosmetic results were obtained without evisceration, enucleation, or tatooing.
