Abstract

PURPOSE: We evaluated the effect and safety of testosterone undecanoate (Andriol?) in the aging male with sexual dysfunction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Twenty-two patients over 40 years old who complained of decreased sexual desire and erectile dysfunction enrolled in this study. Oral testosterone supplementation was performed by 40mg of Andriol 3 times per day for 2 months. Sexual function was measured using International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF). Serum testosterone (total and free form) and serum PSA levels were measured before and after testosterone supplementation.
RESULTS
Fifteen of 22 patients finished this study. Sexual desire and erectile function scores increased significantly after 4 and 8 weeks of testosterone supplementation (p<0.05). However, total and free testosterone levels did not change significantly after testosterone supplementation. Serum PSA levels also did not significantly change after testosterone supplementation (p>0.05). Andriol was well tolerated without significant adverse reactions and laboratory findings.
CONCLUSION
Testosterone undecanoate appears to be effective and safe oral androgen in the aging male with sexual dysfunction. However, further studies are needed to confirm the long term effect of oral testosterone supplementation on the serum PSA levels and other side effects.
