Abstract

Priapism may be primary(idiopathic) or secondary to sickle cell anemia, trauma, leukemia, drugs, venous thromboembolic disease, and other less common disorders. It has become more common with the development of vasoactive drug injection for the treatment of erectile impotence. Priapism also is a rare but serious adverse effect of psychotropic drugs and results from their peripheral alpha-adrenoreceptor blocking action. We report a case of priapism associated with the use of chlorpromazine, which was managed by a corpora cavernosum-spongiosum shunt operation.
