Expressions of Telomerase, Survivin and Bcl-2 in Patients with Gastric Cancer and Benign Gastric Diseases

Abstract

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Inhibition of apoptosis is associated with gastric carcinogenesis. Telomerase, survivin, and Bcl-2 are well known as antiapoptotic factors. This study was performed to investigate correlation between expressions of these antiapoptotic factors and gastric diseases such as gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, and carcinoma. METHODS: Seventy patients with gastritis (n=24), intestinal metaplasia (n=15), and gastric cancer (n=31) were enrolled from October 2001 to June 2002. Cancer stage was evaluated by radiologic and pathologic findings. Telomerase activity was investigated by telomeric repeat amplification protocol assay, and expressions of survivin and Bcl-2 were investigated by Western blot. RESULTS: Qualitative test showed no significant correlation between telomerase activity and gastric diseases (gastritis 18/24, intestinal metaplasia 12/15, cancer 25/31), but quantitative test showed significant difference between gastritis (1.29+/-0.91) and cancer (1.90+/-1.08) (p=0.03). Western blot for survivin and Bcl-2 showed no statistical difference between benign gastric disease and cancer. Telomerase activities were higher in patients with gastric cancer stage 4 than in non-metastatic cancer patients, but it was statistically insignificant (p=0.08). Survivin and Bcl-2 showed no significant difference between two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Telomerase activity is thought to be associated with gastric carcinogesis. Survivin and Bcl-2 do not seem to have significant correlation with gastric carcinogenesis.
