Clinical Review of 57 Dead Cases of Tuberculous Meningitis in Children

Abstract

The following results were obtained through the clinical review of 57 dead cases of tuberculous meningitis which were treated at Mokpo Children's T.B. Hospital during the period of 7 years from January 1970 till December 1976. 1) Mortality rate was higher in the younger age group. 2) Seasonal incidence was highes in summer, and next in autumn. 3) Tuberculin test revealed positive reaction in 42.3%, which was much lower than that of other tuberculous patients. 4) The frequent clinical symptoms on admission were in the order of nuchal rigidity, fever and vomiting. 5) In studying the relationship between the finding of CSF and the prognosis, the following was noted:Mean Leukocyte count of dead cases increased, mean protein level increased, and mean chloride level decreased more than those of other patients of tuberculous meningitis. 6) No significant relationship was found between the tuberculousis of outside of meninges and morality rate. 7) The later the treatment started from the onset of disease, the higher the stages of disease on treatment were, the higher the morality rate.
