Abstract
-
Genetic anticipation is generally used to denote an increased severity or an earlier onset of the disease in succeeding generations of families with inherited disease. Recently, several epidemiological studies in familial inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) reported preliminary evidences for genetic anticipation in IBD, especially in Crohn's disease, which may strongly support a genetic role in its development. However, it is controversial whether genetic anticipation occurs in IBD or not. In this article, we look into genetic anticipation in IBD and discuss the problems in the fields of data mining and analysis that are currently under debate. In addition, we emphasize the need for the establishment of Korean IBD Consortium to allow a strong research for diagnosis and treatment of Korean IBD patients. Through the consortium, we can study on the subjects of IBD with the sufficient number of patients and establish data sets of nation's own IBD epidemiology, and thus become internationally competitive.
