Comparison of Hp Kit Test and CLO Test for the Diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori Infection
Abstract
-
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Rapid urease test is the most recommendable endoscopic test for the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. We compared Hp Kit test with CLO test.
METHODS
Through upper endoscopy of 111 patients, biopsy specimens were obtained for Hp Kit test and CLO test. Test results were recorded at 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours and 24 hours. As the final readings, the measurement at 2 hours for Hp Kit test and the measurement at 24 hours for CLO test were selected. In addition, the reaction with the urease producing Staphylococcus hominis (S. hominis) was studied in both tests.
RESULTS
The sensitivities and specificities of the final readings in both tests were similar to each other (Hp Kit test: 94.7% and 100%; CLO test: 98.2% and 88.9%, respectively). However, the sensitivities of the readings at 30 minutes, 1 hour, and 2 hours were significantly higher in Hp Kit test (80.0%, 86.2%, and 94.7%, respectively) than in CLO test (35.1%, 56.1%, and 71.9%, respectively). Color change by the reaction with S. hominis isolates was observed in CLO test, but was not detected in Hp Kit test.
CONCLUSIONS
Both Hp Kit test and CLO test show excellent specificity and sensitivity. However, Hp Kit test is more recommendable because it responses faster.
