The purpose of this study was to investigate if fasting plasma concentrations of lipids were dependent upon the SstI polymorphism of the apolipoprotein CIII gene. A total of 100 Korean men who were apparently healthy and normolipidemic participated in this study. Height, weight, and waist circumference were measured. Body mass index (kg/m2) was calculated. Fasting plasma concentrations of total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, glucose, and insulin were measured with standard methods. Univariate analyses of variance followed by the Bonferroni post hoc tests were used to compare the measured variables across the genotypes. Multivariate linear regressions were carried out with age, smoking, waist circumference, BMI, and genotype as independent variables and the measured lipids, glucose, insulin as dependent variables. With respect to the measured values, the S2S2 homozygotes had significantly higher fasting TG and log10 transformed TG concentrations than the S1S1 homozygotes(p=.022 & .020, respectively). In addition, the regression analysis showed that waist circumference(p<.001) and genotype(p<.001) were independent predictors for fasting TG concentrations. In conclusion, this study showed that the S2S2 homozygotes, especially in the abdominally obese ones, had significantly elevated fasting TG concentration in this study population.
