Effect of Exercise Program on Physical Strength and Function in Elderly

Abstract

Background
Weakness of strength and muscle in old age is risk factor of injury like fall down, resulting in dysfunction to elderly people. The aim of the study was to know the effect of exercise program for 12 weeks to elderly (>60 yrs). Method: Comprehensive exercise program was implemented to 165 elderly in public health center, Moon-kyung city. Weekly 2 hour exercise program with thera-band R , aero-step R , gym-ball R was performed by physical therapist and monitoring medical assistant. Grip strength, timed up and go test (TUG), single leg standing (SLS) test and self frailty questionnaire was compared before and after the program.
Results
Average left and right hand grip power had no significant changes after exercise program. Whole body balance by SLS time significantly improved after exercise program. Overall function with TUG test and was significantly improved after exercise program. Self frail elderly questionnaire score showed a significant improved after program.
Conclusion
Balance and overall function was significantly improved after comprehensive exercise program. Regular comprehensive exercise program should be encouraged in elderly people to increase body balance and general function.
