Abstract

Nearly half of older adults complain of difficulty sleeping and staying awake during the day or of feeling unrested after waking up. Sleep disturbances in older adults are often multifactorial. Medical illness, psychiatric conditions, medication, insomnia, circadian rhythm disturbances, primary sleep disorders, or some combination of any of these factors may result in sleep disturbances in older adults. A thorough sleep history is required and underlying causes of sleep problems should be evaluated. Appropriate treatment of sleep disorders may improve sleep and the quality of life in older adults.
