Factors Affecting Students' Patient Safety Competencies of Nursing College Students before Graduate

Abstract

Purpose
This exploratory study aims to investigate the factors affecting the patient safety competencies of nursing college students before graduation.
Methods
This study surveyed 188 senior nursing students in U city using a structured self-report questionnaire analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 software.
Results
The average scores for knowledge of patient safety, attitude toward patient safety, confidence in performance of patient safety, patient safety management behavior, and patient safety competency were 7.68, 3.90, 4.28, 4.61, and 4.29, respectively. There were significant differences in patient safety competency according to confidence in performance of patient safety. The most significant factors were confidence in performance of patient safety (β=.39, p<.001), and patient safety management behavior (β=.37, p<.001). These variables accounted for 51.3% of the total variance in patient safety competency.
Conclusion
Considering our findings, it is necessary to repeat this study with a larger sample size. We propose that future research should develop programs for patient safety and verify their effectiveness. We also propose research to develop new tools for assessing patient safety competencies in response to the changes of the times.
