Abstract

The importance of sleep medicine has emerged recently as it is well-known now that sleep health affects the onset and progression of various systemic diseases. Sleep-breathing disorders, such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, are gaining popularity in dentistry. Many patients visiting the dental clinic also have sleep disorder, which is particularly common in patients with chronic orofacial pain. However, most dentists are unfamiliar with these sleep disorders. Sleep and pain are known to interact and impact each other through various mechanisms, and clinicians must address these complex issues with a multifaceted approach including lifestyle changes, cognitive behavioral therapy, and medications. Sleep hygiene education is a reliable and effective method for treating sleep disorders and can lead to improved sleep quality and pain relief in patients with orofacial pain.
