Suggestion for Reducing the Platelet Content Requirements of Apheresis Platelet in Korea

Abstract

In the United States, it was announced that when the platelet count standard for apheresis platelets was changed from 3.0×10¹¹ /unit to 2.5×10¹¹ /unit, the total supply of platelet products would increase by 21∼23%. In Korea, the platelet count standard for leukocyte filtration apheresis platelet products must be at least 2.0×10¹¹ /unit, and 75% of the total test samples must be 3.0×10¹¹ /unit or more. The supply of apheresis platelets will become smoother if this standard is changed to at least 2.0×10¹¹ /unit. This can reduce the frequency of platelet supply crises and help treat patients by reducing the transfusion waiting time for patients who frequently receive platelet transfusions.
