Strategic Treatment with Thermal Camera Monitoring of Cold Burn Hand Injury Implicated by Liquid Nitrogen Followed by Secondary Rewarming Burn: A Case Report

Abstract

When it comes to the cold burn injury, rewarming with 37~39^oC running water until the sensory restoration of the affected site is a well-established treatment modality. However, there have been few reports pertaining to liquid nitrogen induced cold burn injury followed by secondary rewarming burn. A 19-year-old male was exposed to liquid nitrogen of −196^oC on his hands while only wearing a cotton glove. After rewarming treatment, tense and painful bullae occurred along the zone of injury. We applied a portable thermal camera to determine the treatment modality based on the state of the wound. With the aid of thermal camera monitoring, complete healing without burn scar contracture and limitation of motion was achieved.
