Development and Evaluation of Patient Safety Education Program for Undergraduate Nursing Students

Abstract

Purpose
The aim of this study is to develop a patient safety education program for undergraduate nursing students and evaluate its effectiveness.
Methods
This study was conducted using a randomized control group pre and post test design. The participants were fifty five undergraduate nursing students. They were assigned to either an experimental group (n=27) or a control group (n=28). Students participated in the education program consisting of a total 4 sessions including knowledge, attitude and activities of patient safety, then evaluated through self-report structured questionnaires. Datas were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 21.0 with Descriptive statistics, x 2 test, Fisher’s exact, Independent t-test, Paired t-test. Teaching methods were lecture, practice and discussion.
Results
Knowledge score of patient safety were significantly improved in the experimental group compared to the control group. But there were no significant difference of attitude and activity score.
Conclusion
Based on these findings, we suggest that repeated and longitudinal studies are needed to improve the effectiveness of this program and enhance patient safety capabilities.
