Abstract

Background
The relationship between cancer survival and sleep duration remains inconsistent, especially for gastric cancer. This study investigated the relationship between sleep duration and gastric cancer survival among Korean adults.
Methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted of 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016–2018) data. A total of 16,365 subjects aged 19 years or older for whom all study-relevant variables were available were included. Subjects were divided by gender and sleep time, defined as the average mean sleep time on weekdays and weekends. A logistic regression analysis evaluated the association between a lack of sleep and gastric cancer survival, and the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated.
Results
Among the men, 77 of 7,193 patients survived gastric cancer. After adjustment, a lack of sleep was 0.38 times less common among gastric cancer survivors (P=0.050). Among the women, 46 of 9,172 patients survived gastric cancer. There was no association between a lack of sleep and gastric cancer survival.
Conclusion
In men, a lack of sleep was 0.38 times less common among gastric cancer survivors. However, there was no association between sleep duration and gastric cancer survival among women. Further studies are needed of gender-based differences in the association between sleep duration and gastric cancer survival.
