Report of Survey on Treatment Result of Patients of Health Centres

Abstract

A survey on distribution and treatment results of the patients (about 30,000) registered at health centres during first half of 1967 was conducted by sampling method.
Methods
The 191 health centres in the whole country were stratified into three categories, i.e. Seoul City, other cities and guns. One sixteenth of patients in aII the nine health centres in Seoul City, one fourth of patients in 11 out of 43 other city health centers and aII of patients in 9 out of 139 - Gun health centers were randomly selected, thus the number of patients (1, 832 ) were just one sixteenth of aII patients admitted during the period concerned in each stratum. By the time survey was made aII of the patients had already been treated for 12 to 18 months except those died or discharged for various reasons Four of the authors visited different health centres and reviewed patients records and x-ray films and coIIected data according to predesigned forms.
Results
Distribution 01 the patients Among 1,832 patients 68.4% of the patients were at the age of 20-50 years, and the number of male patients were twice of female. About 55% of the patients were at advanced stages and 20% with cavities. 56% were sputum positive. As the opinion of the investigators about 20% of the patients were either normal or inactive and other findings on initial x-ray films. Result of treatment The implication of the total treatment results is evaluated in terms of reduction in the nunber of positive cases and cavitary cases. The proportion of those with positive sputum among the total of 1, 153 cases decreased from 56.5% to 32.9% or a decrease of 23.6%, and the proportion of those with cavities among the total of 528 decreased from 27.3% to 20.8% or a decrease of 6.5%.
Conclusion
A total result of 23.6% reduction in suptum positive cases and 6.5% reduction in cavitary cases is not significant on epidemiological impact, though there were many difficulties involved in the treatment programme. Thus authors recommend the government that technical supervision should be emphasized by every possible means.
