Comparative Histochemical Study on the Mucosa of Respiratory Tract

Abstract

A comparative histochemical study of the respiratory mucosa was done to demonstrate mucopolysaccharide, RNA, DNA and alkaline phosphatase activity with the mouse, rat, guinea pig, rabbit, cat and dog. The results obtained were as follows: 1) Ciliated columnar cells of the mucosa were nill to scarcely reacted with AJcian Blue and PAS, weakly positive in RNA and DNA in all animals, but alkaline phosphatase activity was moderate to strong positive except the mouse and cat (almost nill). 2) Basal cells of the mucosa were nill to scarcely reacted with Alcian Blue and PAS, weakly to moderate positive in RNA, moderate to strong positive in DNA in all animals, but alkaline phosphatase activity was more moderately positive in all animals except the mouse and rabbit (scarcely reacted). 3) Goblet cells of the mucosa were stained with Alcian BJue moderate to strongly in all animals except the mouse (nill), similar reaction to PAS, but RNA, DNA and alkaline phosphatase activity were scarcely recognized in all animals. 4) Laryngeal glands were stained moderately with Alcian Blue, moderate to strong positive to PAS in all animals except the mouse (weak reaction), moderate to strong positive in RNA except the mouse and rabbit. DNA was weakly positive except the rat and rabbit which showed moderate to strong positive and alkaline phosphatase activity was weakly positive 'except the guinea pig which showed moderately positive. 5) Glands of the trachea and bronchi were stained with Alcian Blue moderate to strongly in all animals except the mouse (scarcely reached), moderate to strong positive to PAS except the mouse (weak reaction), moderately positive in RNA except the mouse (weakly positive), weak to moderately positive in DNA in all animals, but alkaine phosphatase activity was moderately positive in all animals except the guinea pig and cat which showed strong positive. 6) Bronchiolar epitheliums were scarcely stained with Alcian Blue in all animals, also weakly reacted to PAS in all animals except the rat (scarcely reacted). RNA was weakly positive in all animals except the guinea pig (scarcely recognized) and the dog (strong positive). DNA was moderately positive in all animals except the rat (weakly positive) and alkaline phosphatase activity was moderate to strong positive in all animals except the mouse and rabbit which showed weak positive reaction.
