Inhibitory Effect in Vitro of Commercial Products of Antituberculosis Agents on the Growth of Tubercle Bacilli

Abstract

Three antituberculosis agents commercially available, isoniazid, streptomycin, and p-aminosalicylic acid (PAS) were tested for antituberculosis activity. Nine samples of isoniazid, six samples of streptomycin, and three samples of PAS were tested and compared for inhibitory effect of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Test results obtained are as follows. 1. Most isoniazid samples showed mininal inhibitory concentration ranging from 0.05μ g to 0 .2μ g. 2. Streptomycin and PAS samples showed minimal inhibitory concentration ranging from 2.5μg to 10μg and from 0.4μg to 1μg respectively. Antibacterial activity obtained from the test results when compared with the known standard drug sample showed that the drug samples tested yielded corresponding values as those quoted for the standard.
