A Study on the Case Rate of Female Genital Tuberculosis, 1963-1978

Abstract

During the past decades. there has been a steady decrease in the prevalence rate of pulmonary tuberculosis reported in Korea. To determine if there was any trend in the incidence of female genital tuberculosis and those of extrapulmonary tuberculosis according to the decreasing incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis. a study was made on 1572 cases of adnexal pathology at pelvic operations. 1351 cases in primary infertility with endometrial biopsy. 657 cases with diagnostic D & C. and 2060 cases with bilateral salpingectomy for sterilization treated at Ilsin Women’ s Hospital during the 16 years 1963-1978. The following findings were noted. 1. The case rates of incidental genital tuberculosis of adnexal pathology in pelvic operations were 4.88% for 1963-1966, 3.86% for 1967-1970, 0.99% for 1971-1974 and 0.76% for 1975-1978, and the case rates of endometrial tuberculosis in primary infertility were 4.40%, 4.10%, 3.03% and 1.36% respectively. A significant decreasing trend in the case rates were noted. 2. The case rates of endometrial tuberculosis in cases with diagnostic D & C were 0. 75% for 1963-1970 and 0.51 for 1971-1978, of incidental tubal tuberculosis in tubal pregnancy 1.03% and 0.20%, and of incidental tubal tuberculosis with bilateral salpingectomy for sterilization 0. 66% and 0.07%, respectively. 3. The prevalence rates of pulmonary tuberculosis has steadily decreased with corresponding decrease of similar degree in the case rates of female genital tuberculosis.
