A Clinical Study of Spontaneous Pneumothorax

Abstract

After the cIinical examination on 100 cases of spontaneous pneumothorax who have suffered from January, 1975 to October, 1980, we now have the results as follows. 1. To examine in the view points of age, sex and arising parts, this happened much more to males than to females by the ratio of 3: 1 and 60% was occupied by the active ages of 20 to 40, and the arising parts were nearly half and half to both of left and right. 2. The causes were mainly from tuberculosis (62%) and each 16% from emphysema, rupture of bullae and other unknown factors, respectively. 3. Medical treatments offered were 10 cases of bed rest, 43 cases of exsufflation, 35 cases of cIosed thoracotomy and 12 cases of operations. 4. The results of our medical treatments were complete recovery in 36 cases , favorable response in 45 cases, relapse in 14 cases and death in 5 cases.
