Ambulatory Retreatment Chemotherapy in a Chest Clinic

Abstract

The present report concerns the results of 1 year’s retreatment chemotherapy on ambulatory patients treated at Korean Institute of Tuberculosis Chest Clinic commencing 1 January 1977 through 31 December 1978. Total patients who have started chemotherapy were 499. 193 patients have dropped out before a year of treatment. Remaining 305 patients have completed more than one year of treatment and thus were the subjects of present analyses. Favourable bacteriological response on cultures were attained in 210(92.5%) out of 227 patients on rifampicin containing regimens; 51 (84%) out of 61 patients on regimens not containing rifampicin; and 4(22%) out of 18 patients with intractable disease with multiple drug resistance. The radiological responses were not remarkable, showing minimal changes on the whole. Adverse reaction to prothionamide, with complaints of gastrointestinal troubles, was common, especially in the first one or two months. Hepatic dysfunction, as evidenced by transaminase elevation, was observed in 28(10.5%) of 266 patients on pyrazinamide containing regimens. 45(17%) out of 266 patients complained of arthralgias, mainly of knee joints, ameliorated several months later despite of the continued pyrazinamide administration.
