Abstract

30 patients with either pulmonary nodule or pulmonary mass had lung aspirations using Chiba fine needle, 22-23 gauge. 1) Men were 20, Women were 10, Mean age was 52±12 years. 2) Overall success rate was 87% (26/30), and accuracy was 73% (22/30). 3) In success cases, benign lesion was 11 (42%), malignant lesion was 15(58%). In benign lesions, there were Tuberculoma 9, Hamartoma 1, Aspergilloma 1, and in malignant lesion, Squamous cell Ca 6, Small cell Ca 3, Undifferentiated large cell Ca 2, Adenoca 2, Unclassified malignant celll 2. 4) Complications were minimal, mild pneumothorax occured in 2 patients(7%) and mild hemoptysis occured in 1 partients(3%) (Blood-tinged sputum occured in many subjects but they were excluded in counting of complications) 5) In 15 cases, the size of lesion was smaller than 4 cm in diameter. Among them 12 cases (80%) were benign. Rest of 15 cases, 80% were malignant(p<0.05). 6) Past history of pulmonary tuberculosis with treatment did not relate to benign or malignant diagnosis. 7) Subjects with respiratory symptoms had higher rate of malignant than without.
