Ventilatory Lung Function in Scoliosis

Abstract

This study analyzed the preoperative ventilatory lung function of 86 subjects of scoliosis and also compared pre. and postoperatively, in 28 subjects. The results are summarized as follows; 1) The ventilatory lung function test of 86 subjects with scoliosis showed only the reduction in % predicted FVC and free of expiratory flow limitation. 2) Major angle of scoliosis was significantly correlated with % predicted FVC, especially in subjects with idiopathic thoracic or paralytic scoliosis. 3) The mean of % predicted FVC was reduced even in the group of angle of scoliosis less than 61 degrees. 4) The effect of significant kyphosis on % predicted FVC didn't seem to be additive to that of scoliosis. 5) The angle of scoliosis and % predicted FVC were varied with the etiology and type of curve of scoliosis. 6) The postoperative % predicted FVC was improved or stationary in 25/28 subjects(89. 3% ).
